Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social networking has evolved with the rise of digital media, providing an avenue for individuals and groups to connect, share, and collaborate on various activities. In Keffi Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, artisans who specialize in various trades such as tailoring, carpentry, and metalworking have traditionally depended on local networks and word-of-mouth to expand their businesses. However, the increasing use of digital media, particularly social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has revolutionized how these artisans interact with potential clients, collaborators, and suppliers. Digital media enables artisans to showcase their work, advertise their services, and form professional networks beyond geographical constraints. Previous studies (Adebayo & Adamu, 2023) suggest that digital media has significantly enhanced networking opportunities for small business owners, particularly artisans. This study will investigate the extent to which digital media impacts social networking among artisans in Keffi, focusing on the ways it helps them increase their reach, collaborate with peers, and access new markets.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Artisans in Keffi LGA, like many in rural areas, face challenges in expanding their businesses due to limited access to larger markets and professional networks. While traditional networking methods are still prevalent, they are often inadequate for artisans seeking to expand their influence and access new opportunities. The growing use of digital media presents an opportunity to enhance these social networks and business opportunities. However, little is known about how artisans in Keffi are utilizing digital media for networking purposes. This study aims to examine the role of digital media in enhancing social networking among artisans in the area and its impact on their business growth and collaboration.

The study is focused on the use of digital media for social networking among artisans in Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State, and does not extend to other regions or industries. The study also does not address the broader impacts of digital media on other aspects of the artisans' lives.
